In the 20th century the main ‘work from home’ jobs were usually finishing factory products, overlocking garments, bagging items into multi-packs, and so on. In more modern times more or less all office jobs can be done remotely. Remote working has become more commonplace in the past 5 years and is helping to make the workplace more accessible, flexible, and resilient to disasters.

There are many reasons for working from home/remote working sometimes this could be to help a single parent gain access to the workplace, allow disabled workers work from the comfort of their own home, and even to enable the business to continue after a disaster. Some of the disasters that could affect a business are: fires, floods, utility faults and even national emergencies – there’s currently even talk of encouraging “Working from Home” due to the Coronavirus strain COVID-19.

So, who can work from home? Nearly every office worker can work from home – all you need is a laptop, and a few cloud-based services to get you running and off the ground. Some of the services that’ll help you be able to work remotely are:

  • Laptop – In earlier years people would shy away from having a laptop. Believing they’d need a laptop, and a desktop (tower) PC one for work, and one for home. But with modern technology and port replicators/docking stations you can use your laptop at home, and in the office with multiple monitors, a keyboard, and a mouse!
  • Microsoft 365 – a cloud based email server, all your Office productivity apps, which also includes Microsoft Teams to help you ease communication with the rest of your team!
  • VoIP – Voice over IP – basically telephony over the Internet. You don’t even need a handset; you can use an app on your laptop (soft phone) and still make calls
  • Cloud Hosted Desktop – Your work computer in the cloud. This means that you can use the same ‘PC’ wherever you are in the world.
